CHICAGO -- Chad Henne did all he could to keep the starting quarterback job with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Miguel Andujar Jersey . First-round pick Blake Bortles was about as good. Henne passed for 130 yards and a touchdown, and Bortles threw for 160 in relief before backup quarterback Jordan Palmer rallied the Chicago Bears to a 20-19 preseason victory over the Jaguars on Thursday night. Palmer, trying to beat out Jimmy Clausen for the No. 2 job, led Chicago to two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Senorise Perry scored on a 5-yard run with 50 seconds left, and C.J. Wilson intercepted a pass to seal the win after Henne and Bortles picked the Bears apart. Jared Allen made his first appearance for Chicago after signing in the off-season and finished with one tackle for a loss on an otherwise quiet night. The five-time Pro Bowl defensive end sat out last weeks opening win over Philadelphia after he missed practices because his wife had a baby. Henne showed mobility in the pocket and completed 12 of 17 passes before leaving with a 13-7 lead in the second quarter. "We feel very strongly about Chad," coach Gus Bradley said. But he also plans to give Bortles some snaps with the first team, possibly in the coming week. The rookie looked sharp again after an impressive showing last week in a victory over Tampa Bay. The No. 3 pick in the draft, Bortles went 11 for 17, but the Jaguars came away with the loss. Chicagos Jay Cutler completed 7 of 9 passes for 79 yards and called it a night after throwing a 4-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Marshall early in the second quarter. Clausen got the first call after Cutler left the game, with Palmer serving as the second man in relief in a flip from the preseason opener. But Clausen struggled through some headset problems after a strong performance last week. The former Notre Dame star and Carolina Panther went 11 of 15 for 94 yards. He also had a pass intercepted by Josh Evans early in the third quarter off linebacker Telvin Smiths deflection after the headset went out on him. "There were three to five plays where it just became confusion and he really didnt get us into the best plays," coach Marc Trestman said. "He was trying to make something good out of a bad situation, and there wasnt any way I could help him. That group of I would say up to a half a dozen plays when Jimmy was in there, it was very difficult to evaluate." Palmer started the fourth quarter and threw for 73 yards, completing 6 of 9 passes. "This is a competition and coaches have done a phenomenal job of making it very fair, evaluating us every day and so when you get to the preseason, you wait until your turn and then you go in there and try to make the most of it," Palmer said. Martellus Bennett had a 25-yard catch after being suspended by the team last week for an altercation in practice with cornerback Kyle Fuller, who left this game after injuring his ankle on the opening possession. Jacksonvilles Toby Gerhart ran for 19 yards in his first appearance with the Jaguars. The former Minnesota Vikings backup had missed nearly two weeks because of a hip flexor injury. Marqise Lee caught four passes for 27 yards and a touchdown after struggling against Tampa Bay. Mercedes Lewis had 46 yards on three receptions. The Jaguars scored on all three first-quarter possessions while grabbing a 13-0 lead, with Josh Scobee kicking a pair of field goals and Henne hitting Lee with a 6-yard touchdown pass. The TD came after Chicagos Eric Weems fumbled away a kickoff. The Bears cut it to 13-7 early in the second quarter, when Cutler hit Marshall with a 4-yarder to cap a 10-play drive. But a 43-yard field goal by Scobee late in the half made it 16-7. "Definitely the first couple of drives we wanted to get the tempo going," Henne said. "The way we did that was first and second down. We moved the chains and got some explosive plays out of it as well." Notes: Trestman said he has no issue with Marshall serving as an analyst for Showtimes "Inside the NFL" show. "I trust Brandon," he said. "He asked me about it. I trust him to make a decision that was in the best interest of the team first, and I know Brandon. I know hell do that." ... Trestman had few details on CB Kyle Fuller (ankle) and backup TE Zach Miller (foot) after they left the game with injuries. He did say the bruised knee that kept DE Willie Young out of the game is not serious. ... Jaguars RT Austin Pasztor (broken hand) and backup C Luke Bowanko (sprained ankle) left the game. Every one that San Diego State missed seemed to end up back in its hands, there for an easy layup or wide open dunk. You would have thought it was the Jayhawks who were playing on the road. Instead, the 21st-ranked Aztecs persevered down the stretch behind 16 points from Xavier Thames, whose four free throws in the closing seconds Sunday sealed a 61-57 victory over No. 16 Kansas, ending the Jayhawks 68-game non-conference winning streak at Allen Fieldhouse. "The way I see it, we got exactly what we deserved. They were better than us," said Kansas coach Bill Self, who had more Big 12 titles (nine straight) on his resume coming into the game than he had losses (eight overall) at the Jayhawks venerable on-campus arena. "This is a hard place to win," Self said. "They made us play poorly." Still, Kansas (9-4) had a chance to tie the game when Perry Ellis went to the free throw line with 11.9 seconds left. He made his first free throw but, after San Diego State (12-1) called time out to ice him, Ellis missed the second and the Jayhawks were forced to foul. Thames made both free throws to give San Diego State a three-point lead, and the Aztecs fouled rather than allow Kansas to attempt a tying 3. Frank Mason missed the first and made the second, and Thames made two more free throws with 4.6 seconds left to seal the win. "We all missed shots we usually make," said freshman Andrew Wiggins, who had 14 points for the Jayhawks, "and thats going to happen from time to time with a young team." Mason also finished with 14 points, and Joel Embiid had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Kansas, which had won 112 of its last 114 games at Allen Fieldhouse. "Every play we made, it seemed like they came down, they got something positive out of the next possession," Mason said. "We just couldnt get the stops we needed." Skylar Spencer finished with 13 points and Josh Davis had 10 for the Aztecs, who have won 11 straight since losing to No. 1 Arizona on Nov. 14. That streak is tied for the second-best in school history and traiils only the 20-0 start of the 2010-11 team. Don Mattingly Jersey. The Jayhawks struggled against the long, lanky Aztecs right from the start, missing eight of their first nine shots and allowing San Diego State to dictate the tempo. After a 3-pointer by Naadir Tharpe gave Kansas a 9-8 lead, the Jayhawks had just one more field goal over the next 8-plus minutes. Thames and Davis had no such trouble for San Diego State, hitting a series of jumpers and contested layups as the Aztecs built a 29-23 halftime lead. Kansas wound up shooting 20.7 per cent (6 of 29) in the first half. "They missed some shots," San Diego State coach Steve Fisher said, "but we didnt give them a lot of shots from the sweet spots, where they wanted them." The Aztecs kept up the intensity in the second half, forcing the Jayhawks to misfire on eight of their first 10 shots with their in-your-face, man-to-man defence. The lead slowly grew to 44-33 when JJ OBrien converted after two misses, once more silencing a packed crowd at the Phog. The Jayhawks finally started to build some momentum midway through the second half, closing within 58-56 on a basket by Wiggins and 50-48 on Tharpes scooping layup. It seemed as if every time Kansas went on a run, though, the Aztecs had an answer. Spencer scored after Tharpes basket, and Thames curled in a 3-pointer to give San Diego State a 55-48 lead with 3 minutes to play. Kansas made one more salvo, getting within 57-55 on a 3-pointer by Mason and seemingly getting the ball back after OBrien missed a free throw. During a stoppage in play, the officials determined that the ball went off Kansas with 44.8 seconds left. And even though the Jayhawks got a stop, it cost them precious time. Self called a timeout with 20 seconds left and decided to go with Ellis, the sure-handed sophomore. He drove to the basket and was fouled, but the 72 per cent free throw shooter could only make the first of his two attempts, and San Diego State eventually held on to win. "This is a great win for us," Thames said. "A lot of teams dont come in here and get victories. Im just blessed to be a part of this one." ' ' '
